SUMMARY:Render Unto Kiều - On Reading & Translating The Tale of Kiều
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with Bình Nguyễn and Vinh Quốc Nguyễn \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Library\, Vietnam Society\, and Columbia University’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute for a unique conversation about the classic of Vietnamese literature The Tale of Kiều\, newly translated by Bình Nguyễn. Moderated by Thuý Dinh\, the dialogue between Bình Nguyễn and Vinh Quốc Nguyễn newly explores a beloved literary classic. \nCopies of the book will be available for sale. \n  \n\n\n\n📅 Date: Sunday\, October 12\, 2025\n⏰ Time: 1 – 3 PM\n📍 Location: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library \n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK\nThe Tale of Kiều—or Kiều for short—is a poetic narrative written by Nguyễn Du in the 19th century\, adapted from a 17th century Chinese romance novel. Considered one of the greatest classics in Vietnamese literature\, the 2025 English translation by Bình Nguyễn is intended as both corrective reading and deep appreciation for the work’s popular impact via Vietnam’s oral tradition and ingenious distribution networks. Rejecting an epic\, but “narrow and outdated” interpretation of Kiều as emblematic of Vietnam’s colonial history and its author’s divided political allegiance\, Bình movingly illustrates how Nguyễn Du successfully transformed a formulaic Chinese novel into a well-rounded\, dynamic portrait of Vietnamese culture\, beloved by both the intelligentsia and common folk\, even adapted into bedtime lullabies for children. Discussing Thuý Kiều’s years of wandering as a woman\, artist\, and outsider\, Bình passionately analyzes how Nguyễn Du’s 3\,254-line poem plumbs the complexities of human nature to define and also defy social hierarchy\, gender\, and sexuality. \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKERS AND MODERATOR \n\nBình Nguyễn\, a native of Hà Nội\, Việt Nam\, had lived there continuously until they graduated from high school. Considered a prodigy\, they published a series of Vietnamese-language sci-fi novels for young readers in 2011\, when they were only ten. An earlier version of their English translation of Kiều received the 2022 Young Writers Award for Translation from the Vietnamese Writers’ Association. They graduated from the University of Arizona in May 2023 with a double degree in Astronomy and Linguistics\, and is currently a PhD student in Astronomy at the University of Washington\, Seattle\, where they study passive galaxies in the early days of the Universe. Transplanted thousands of miles from their birthplace\, Bình finds emotional solace in Nguyễn Du’s poetry\, which to them is “like a star whose light [travels] hundreds of light-years to [align] on the shoulder of a crying child.” Their scientific endeavors and literary projects share one common goal: to embrace ancient canons in exploring what it’s like to be human in the modern world. They are currently working on the first Vietnamese translation of Virgil’s Aeneid\, and seeking publication for Diệu and the Green Drum\, their English-language debut novel reinterpreting the Arthurian romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. \nVinh Quốc Nguyễn received his BA in East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC)\, MA in Regional Studies – East Asia (RSEA)\, and PhD in History and East Asian Languages (HEAL)\, all from Harvard University. He has done research in Vietnam under fellowships from the Fulbright Program and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). In November 2021\, for Columbia Poetry Night\, Vinh gave a tremendously insightful\, wide-ranging talk on eight out of ten existing English translations of Kiều (this talk took place before the publication of Bình Nguyễn’s current English translation). Vinh’s in-depth knowledge of Vietnam’s late premodern period\, which covers Nguyễn Du’s era (late 18th century to 19th century)\, familiarity with Hán-Nôm philology\, specialized interest in gender/queer studies\, and accomplished teaching experience will definitely add salient dimensions to the proposed conversation. \nThuý Đinh (moderator) is a bilingual critic\, literary translator\, coeditor of the Vietnamese webzine Da Màu\, and editor-at-large for the Vietnamese Diaspora at Asymptote Journal. On April 30 of this year\, she was one of four panelists on the panel Beyond Legacy\, Beyond Memory: South Vietnamese Literature from the Fall into the Future\, hosted by Columbia University’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute\, discussing South Vietnamese Literature (1954-1975) and its influence on diasporic Vietnamese literature. She also served as guest editor for Words Without Borders’ recently-launched Special Issue on Literature of the Vietnamese Diaspora. \n  \n\n\n\n🔗 Register here: Event Link \nFind out ongoing information on our website (www.vietnamsociety.org) and on our social media @vietnamsociety.

He is currently Artist-in-Residence at Columbia University’s Weatherhead East Asian Institute and teaches in Columbia’s School of the Arts graduate film program. \nHis films include Yellow Lotus\, Three Seasons\, Green Dragon\, and The Throwaways. His short film\, Yellow Lotus\, was the first Vietnamese language film to be screened at the Sundance Film Festival and received over 15 national and international festival awards. \nHis feature film debut\, Three Seasons\, was the first American-Vietnamese co-production to be filmed entirely in Vietnam. The film received the Grand Jury Prize\, Audience Award\, and Best Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival\, along with two Independent Spirit Awards nominations. Three Seasons was also Vietnam’s official entry to the Oscars\, where it was shortlisted. \nIn 2024\, Three Seasons was showcased once again at the Sundance Film Festival\, chosen as one of ten films from the festival’s four decade history to celebrate its 40th anniversary. \nTony is a recipient of the Humanitas Prize and an alumnus of the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriting and Directing Labs. He has written and developed projects for HBO\, Warner Bros.\, and NBC. \nTony previously served on the Board of Directors of Film Independent for seven years and is currently on the Global Advisory Board of Fulbright University Vietnam. \nAs Artist-in-Residence at Columbia\, Tony has brought filmmakers\, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists\, global activists\, and more to the campus as guest speakers to engage in vital conversations about the role of artists and truth seekers. \nIn the summer of 2024\, in partnership with the Weatherhead East Asian Institute\, Tony held public talks in Ho Chi Minh City\, Hanoi\, Singapore\, Hong Kong\, and Beijing. These events\, titled Conversations in Storytelling: Regional Voices\, Global Impact\, brought together notable filmmakers in each city for discussions on the role and significance of regional storytelling in today’s world. \nTony’s next narrative feature film is based on Nick Ut’s iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning “Napalm Girl” photo from the Vietnam War. \n  \n\n\n\n🔗 Register here: Event Link \nFind out ongoing information on our website (www.vietnamsociety.org) and on our social media @vietnamsociety.

SUMMARY:SPIRES — Cathedrals of Vietnam's Red River Delta
DESCRIPTION:Join Vietnam Society\, World Oregon\, OVEEVA\, and PLACE for a special photo exhibition and artist talk with celebrity artist photographer Peter Steinhauer! Registration is not required for both the exhibition and artist talk. \n  \n\nArtist Reception and Talk\n📅 Date: April 17th \n⏰ Time: Reception\, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM; Talk\, 6:00 PM \n📍 Location: PLACE\, 735 NW 18th Avenue\, Portland OR 97209 \nAccompanying the talk is a special photographic exhibition “Spires — Cathedrals of Vietnam’s Red River Delta”\, a selection of Peter Steinhauer’s latest project which captures majestic cathedrals built during the French colonial period of the 19th and early 20th centuries. These edifices were not merely architectural imports\, but adaptations blending French Gothic and Romanesque styles with Vietnamese design sensibilities. Each photograph invites you to a space where spirituality meets artistry. Regrettably\, many of these architectural marvels now face neglect\, deterioration\, or intentional dismantlement. Their fading presence erases unique chapters of architectural brilliance\, diminishing visual testimonies of a bygone era of cultural amalgamation. Through this project\, Steinhauer seeks to immortalize their elegance\, narrating the profound stories embedded in their sacred silhouettes before they blend into the annals of history. \nThis exhibition will be on display from April 5th – 25th\, Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM. \n🖼️ Preview the exhibition here: SPIRES — Cathedrals of Vietnam’s Red River Delta \n\n\nAbout the Artist\nPeter Steinhauer  \nPeter Steinhauer is an artist photographer\, and he lived and worked in Asia for twenty years\, beginning in Vietnam in 1993. To honor more than 3 million people from Vietnam\, the U.S. and several other countries who lost their lives in the war\, Quế Mai will perform her poetry in Vietnamese and English. Peter will share his perspectives and photographs of Vietnam from the past 30 years\, which captures his admiration for Vietnam’s beauty and deep respect of the Vietnamese people’s resilience\, survival and creativity.  \nThe two artists will answer questions from the audience\, help us commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in the most meaningful ways\, and suggest the work which we can all do together to contribute to global peace.  The talk will conclude with book signings.  Que Mai will sign her new poetry book “The Color of Peace”\, “The Mountains Sing” and “Dust Child”\, and Peter will sign his book “Enduring Spirit of Vietnam” which received the award “Best Photography Book of the Year” in 2007 by Photo District News (PDN). \nThe “Enduring Spirit of Vietnam” Talk will travel to major U.S. cities\, including Seattle\, Portland\, Washington DC\, and Chicago\, and to Vietnam\, including Hanoi and Saigon. \nSpecial Photo Exhibition \nAccompanying the talk is a special photographic exhibition “Spires — Cathedrals of Vietnam’s Red River Delta”\, a selection of Peter Steinhauer’s latest project which captures majestic cathedrals built during the French colonial period of the 19th and early 20th centuries. \nAbout the Speakers \nNguyễn Phan Quế Mai \nBorn and raised in Việt Nam\, Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai is the author of thirteen books in Vietnamese and English\, most recently the global bestselling novels The Mountains Sing and Dust Child\, and the forthcoming poetry book The Color of Peace. Her writing has been translated into more than twenty-five languages and has received the PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award\, the International Book Award\, the BookBrowse Best Debut Award\, the Lannan Literary Fellowship in Fiction as well as Runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.  She was named by Forbes Việt Nam as one of 20 inspiring women of 2021. SUMMARY:The Island by Tuan Andrew Nguyen: Video Screening
DESCRIPTION:Special viewing of Tuan Andrew Nguyen’s single-channel color video The Island (2017)\, followed by a discussion led by Smithsonian American Art Museum Time-Based Media Curator Saisha Grayson. The forty-two minute video (with Vietnamese translation)\, set on the Malaysian island of Pulau Bidong\, artfully combines Vietnamese refugee history with futurism to explore the impact of forced global migrations in startlingly innovative ways. The Island highlights the challenges of isolation\, repercussions of state-enforced relocation\, and the fundamental tension between remembering and honoring past trauma while not undermining the possibilities of a distinct future.  This special program\, in collaboration with Smithsonian American Art Museum\, provides a unique opportunity for Vietnamese refugees to view and reflect on their own migration experiences. Tuan Andrew Nguyen is an internationally recognized artist whose work has been shown in numerous film festivals and international exhibitions\, and included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art\, the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.  \nREGISTER HERE
