Summary
Hosted at Columbia University, Conversations Left Unsettled brought together Dr. Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai and photographer Peter Steinhauer for an in-depth exploration of the emotional landscapes left by the Vietnam War. Moderated by filmmaker Tony Bui, the conversation addressed the unspoken dialogues that persist within families and across generations, and the responsibilities artists carry in giving voice to these stories.
Dr. Quế Mai spoke about inherited trauma, intergenerational silence, and the transformative potential of literature. Her readings offered a powerful reflection on the resilience of Vietnamese communities around the world. Steinhauer shared photographs and personal stories from his decades of work in Vietnam, emphasizing how images can build bridges between histories and people.
The event closed with audience questions and a shared commitment to continuing the work of remembrance, empathy, and healing. Guests then met the artists for book signings and informal discussion.
